- 2½ lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1½ cups milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese or Gruyère
- 2 garlic cloves minced
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
Slowly add milk and cream, whisking until thickened.
Add garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
Stir in cheese until smooth. Remove from heat.
Layer half the potatoes in the dish. Pour half the sauce over. Repeat.
